An admission to the hospital is a difficult and confusing experience whether planned for or due to an emergency. Knowing what to expect during the admission and hospital stay can help you, the family caregiver, and your family member. This guide has information about the admission process, titles and job responsibilities for many hospital-based health care professionals, common problems and ways to solve them and other important facts.

Many people are held in hospital emergency room (ER), on special observation units, or even in a regular hospital room without being admitted to the hospital. This is called "observation." This can even be for several days. Whether or not a person has been admitted to a hospital affects payment as well as services after leaving the hospital, such as home care and rehabilitation.
