Next Step in Care: Family Caregivers & Health Care Professionals Working Together

For Health Care Providers

Working with Home Health Aides

Home health aides, personal care attendants, companions, and homemakers are often an important part of care at home for the seriously or chronically ill patient. However, a lack of understanding of roles, of what to look for in an aide, what to expect from an agency, and what to expect from hiring someone privately can sabotage the relationship. This can lead to poor outcomes for the patient. Use this guide to help a family caregiver identify points that should be discussed and agreed upon between the family caregiver, the patient, the aide, and the agency at the start of care, or if the care situation has changed.
